The Gaelic personal name "Domhnall" is composed of the Celtic elements "dubro", meaning world, and "val", might, rule and is found in 13th Century Scotland as "Dofnald", "Douenald" and "Dufenald". One Lucas filius (son of) Douenaldi was a Scots prisoner of War in Berkhamstede in 1296, according to the Calendar of Documents relating to Scotland. Hi There, I am trying to find out my family history, my great grandfather's name was Ferdinand Cathcart Donaldson and he was born in 1903 in Cape Town. My great great grandfather was born round about the 1800 in Scotland in Ayshire...not to sure...his name John William Donaldson...he arrived with the settlers in 1820 in Cape Town. My great grandfather also named John William Donaldson was born in the Cape Province. He farmed with ostriches near or in Oudtshoorn Eastern Cape. He went to world war 1 he had nine children ...my grandmother Donnelee Doris Donaldson was born 1921/2

Perhaps the journey begins with the Clanna Dedad; Deda, son of Sen or Deda Mac Sin. The Donaldson surname origin is from a Northern Ui Neill [R1b-L513] tribe. The Cenél Eoghan and the tribes of Donegal conquered much of Ulster (Derry and Tyrone).
