GOODWIN Family History
Recorded in various forms including Godwin, Goodwin, Goodswin, and the Norfolk and East Anglian Godswen, this is an ancient English surname. It is of pre 7th century Anglo-Saxon origins, and has the fairly uncommon distinction of surviving the Norman Conquest of 1066, and the later influx of Norman names, which for 'politically correct' reasons killed off many of the early British names, or drove them into the outlying areas. The derivation is from the personal name "Godwine", composed of the elements "god", meaning either "god" or "good", with the second element of "wine", meaning friend or protector or "sweyn", meaning "follower of"...Select Audience

Kenneth Goodwin
My Goodwin family emigrated to Manhattan in 1866 from Drumhillagh, County Monaghan Ireland. It is not known where they lived prior to Monaghan. My 2nd great grandfather was named Peter Goodwin, born about 1814, location unknown. The family has grown considerably since that time and has members all across The US.

Hi Robert, our family our traditional land owners and the name means good freind in old English (before 1066) we are one of the few surviving families from the normand conquest and the name Goodwin is a descendant from names such as godwyn and godwinson yes you are related to the last king of Anglo Saxon England, the reason why there are very few names that have Anglo Saxon meanings is because they where seen as unfashionable when william became king and many where lost so we are lucky to be Goodwin’s recently I saw a Goodwin will in 1600 which roughly amounted too £10,101,000 this shows that the Goodwin line was still very strong (not sure about other lines) but main male descendants where doing well, there is a family coat of arms but with a lack of information out there it is hard to tell if we are entitled to wear it (unlikely) I’m not sure about the Irish side but I found a record of the Goodwin’s on the sinking of the titanic 7 children and 2 adults (I think) died on the titanic , these where Irish who did not have very much money (they where 3rd class passengers). It sounds like you are related to more of the main side complete guess but I reckon your close family left England as part of the main Goodwin’s but over the decades have lost touch.

Hi my name is Robert Evan Goodwin, and live in South Africa, however we are originally from Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) I am told my great grandfather came from Ireland. Is there anyone here who can assist me to find oyut more? Both my parents are late, my father being one Edward Evan Goodwin.
