JOHNSTON Family History
This interesting name is of Scottish locational origin, from the lands thus called in Annandale, Dumfriesshire. The founder of the family, bearing the forename, Jonis, is believed to have followed his overlords from Yorkshire circa 1174 and was granted the lands to which he gave his name. The second element is the medieval English "tone" or "toun", from the Olde English pre 7th Century "tun", a settlement, hence, "Jonistune", later "Johnston" or "Johnstone". I am looking for more of my ancestors. My Johnston family member is my great great grandmother, Catherine K. Johnston (known as Kate), was born 23 August 1862, but we don’t know where. But her first married home was 16 Lake Street, Belfast, Ireland. Kate’s religious affiliations was with St. Jude’s parish 1885-1889. She immigranted to Canada on the 24 April 1891. Kate’s parents were William G. Johnston born around 1832. His occupation was a Joiner in 1884 in Belfast. He was married on the 26 May 1857 at St. Anne’s in Belfast. His wife was Catherine Wilson born around 1832, also known as Eliza Wilson. This is as far as I have been able to go back. Would love help finding the rest of my ancestors.
