KIRKPATRICK Family History
This name is of Scottish locational origin from a chapelry of that name in the parish of Closeburn. The name derives from the Northern Medieval English 'kirk', a church plus Patrick. The church in this case was dedicated to St. Patrick, known as 'The Apostle of Ireland', Patrick, (from the Latin 'Patricius' meaning 'nobleman'), is generally thought to have been born at or near Dumbarton. Several places throughout the British Isles have been named in his honour. The surname from this particular location is first recorded towards the middle of the 12th Century (see below). One, Ivo de Kirkpatrick and his heirs had a charter from Robert Bruce of a place between Blawatwood and the Water of Esk, circa 1190 and a John de Kirkpatrick of Dumfriesshire rendered homage to John Balliol in 1296...Select Audience

Thomas or Thomas John Kirkpatrick died in 1925 in Western Australia. Thomas, wife Eliza and sons Andrew,
Robert, and Thomas arrived on the ship Otago in 1886. I am told they were from County Mayo in Ireland .
On his death certificate his father is named Thomas and he was a schoolteacher. I have contacted Westport
Records and he is unknown. On Robert Kirkpatrick enlistment papers WW1 his birth place was clogher,
Connaught.
I believe his marriage was in 1880, he was 36 and Eliza 20.
Some relatives had gone to America I was told and also there was money held in chancery but have no details.
The Kirkpatricks were the Church of Ireland religion and in Western Australia Thomas was quite involved in
St Bartholemews Anglican Church in East Perth, Western Australia. He was employed as a Ganger with the
Western Australian Government Railways.
His Son Andrew became a leading Jockey and later a trainer.
