SHARKEY Family History
This interesting surname is of Irish origin, and is an Anglicised form of the Gaelic "O'Searcaigh", composed of the elements "O", male descendant of, with "Searcach", a byname meaning "beloved". The name originated in County Tyrone, and is now to be found located in considerable numbers in various parts of the northern half of Ireland, chiefly in counties Roscommon, Donegal and Louth. It appears as O'Serky as well as O'Sharky in the 17th Century Hearth Money Rolls of County Monaghan; but the prefix "O", dropped in the 18th Century, has not been resumed to any extent. Seamus O'Sharkey, a Gaelic poet of the O'Naghten circle in the 1720's, wrote a love poem based on the fact that his surname derives from the Irish word "searc", meaning darling...Select Audience

My grandmother, Sharkey, her mother was a McMillan, and her grandmother was a Burns. They were in Victoria Australia I believe. My grandmother, Sharkey moved to the USA and married a Tyson.

hi I am trying....with not much success..... to race Daniel sharkey from donegal . he immigrated to Australia aboard the Annie h smith in 1877.He was born appro 1852 his parents were James and grace .unfortunately that is the only information that I have. Hoping that someone will recognise them.

Hi Colin. My great grandmother was Kathleen Sharkey and lived in Portadown, Co. Armagh. Im almost certain ive heard of a Henry and possibly a brother named George also. The family bred horses and were quite wealthy people. One of the first in the town to own a television set way back in the day so ive been told.

My ggg grandparents were John Sharkie and Margaret McGhee. They left Ireland sometime between 1838 and 1841 , and were living in Baldernock Scotland. In 1841.
Their children were, Margaret, Mary, Elizabeth. And Patrick.
iI was contacted by a DNA match in Ancestry whose father was Patrick Sharkie, her great grandfather Patrick Sharkie and her great great grandfather Jack Sharkie, whose wife was Kathleen. She told me the family was from Portadown, Armagh and that the family were all horse people who were wealthy at one time. She said they were all buried in Portadown.

Hello I’m a Sharkey living in Australia. I have traced my family back to Henry Sharkey born 1937 port Norris Armagh. He immigrated to Australia & married isabella Mary Matheson, born 1847.
Henry’s parents may have been Patrick and Ellen, but we are not sure.
We would be very grateful for any information anyone might have on our family.
