This famous surname is English locational. It derives from one of several villages called 'Whittington', however it is generally accepted that the Gloucester village is the one which has provided the greatest numbers of nameholders. Included in this number is Dick Whittington, three times Lord Mayor of London in 1397, 1406, and 1419. He died in 1423, aged about seventy five, although neither his birthdate nor his actual place of birth have been proven conclusively. Parish church registers were not introduced until at least a century after his death.
